Starting from an empty canvas can feel daunting. A small amount of structure makes building a design from scratch much easier.

Start with the goal, not the canvas

Before you place anything, it helps to know what the design is for and where it will be used. That decides the proportions you start with and keeps you from reworking everything later. Once that’s clear, open a new canvas and block out the rough areas.

Build in layers

Work from the background forward: the base, then the main elements, then the details on top. Keeping things separated makes it easy to adjust one part without disturbing the rest. You can bring in your own images to edit and combine them with the design tools in the same place.

Refine, then export

Step back and check the spacing and balance before you finish. When it looks right, export the design or save it to your library. Because the file stays in one place, you can return and make a new version later without starting over.

There’s no single right method — but moving from goal, to layout, to detail, to export gives a blank canvas a clear path to a finished design.
